Step Two
Step Two starts with having a genuine desire to get to know God. In order for this to happen, a person must first come to the realization that something is missing within their lives. This is the emotion that drives our honest yearning to search for and find God. This longing is driven by a deep-seated need we each feel for Him. It's been described as "a God sized hole in our heart." The result is that we cannot ever truly be happy without Him. The vast majority of humanity spends their whole lives trying to fill it with earthly things. We all tend to strive for things that we believe will make us happy. That may explain why those who have attained much wealth, status or property are never satisfied.
Everyone has a place in their heart which only God can fill. If you lack this desire to find Him, then you can’t go any further. It means that you likely haven’t fulfilled step one yet. But, I would still urge anyone to pray for God’s wisdom in helping them to recognize His existence. Then, I would call upon Him and ask for divine assistance. God is faithful and will answer your prayer. The Bible teaches us that anyone can come before God. No one is forbidden from coming. It matters not how bad you think you are, or what you might have done in your life, God still loves you—and still wants you. Jesus has already paid the price for the total of your sin. In fact, He paid the sin debt of the whole of mankind. The cost of man’s redemption is free to each and every person. The truth is no one could afford to pay such a price.
But, a correct frame of mind is required in order to be saved. If you are searching for God, the Bible teaches that it all begins with a little bit of faith (See fig. 1). The Greek word for faith is pisteos [PIS-tay-os] and means ‘behavior based on a sufficient conviction that God is telling the truth.’ This means our belief is strong enough to result in action which involves obedience to the Word of God. A person can believe in God and still not have faith. So, step two involves a desire to somehow please God. Without that start to faith, it is impossible to please Him. The word for impossible is adnaton [ad-NAY-ton] and means ‘powerless.’ Apart from faith, we have zero power to please God. We hold no sway over Him whatsoever. That means every person who doesn’t have faith, will be subject to His wrath.
Just as with the Hebrew Exodus, being rescued requires a series of steps of faith to be taken in our walk towards God. Scripture teaches us that while we all are invited to seek God, there is huge advantage given to those who first believe in God before coming to Him (See fig. 2). This verse is a direct word-for-word translation over from the Greek. The word for indeed is gar [gar] and means ‘indeed.’ The dictionary defines indeed as ‘without any question.’ This removes any doubt about the verse. The word for behooves is dei [day] and means ‘necessity brought on by circumstances.’ Your search for God has driven you to this point. The word behooves means ‘to one’s advantage, profit.’ We can now plainly see what the verse is telling us.
God wants for us to seek Him. God uses everyday circumstances to create situations which drive us to towards the idea that we require God’s help. At some point in our lives, we come to the realization of our mortality. We suddenly realize that we are going to die. This brings us to the recognition that we are in mortal danger. It is our desire for rescue which compels us to seek God. And when we do search for Him, that becomes our first step of faith! The Bible tells us that step is of huge benefit when we come to Him with the right frame of mind and a humble spirit.
Step Two is a tiny step of faith in God's direction. You are essentially acting upon your desire to know Him. The first step was believing that He exists. Now you are acting on that belief. You have begun to actively search for Him. Reading the words on this website reflects your effort. I urge you to take it one small step further. Get a copy of the Bible and look up the Scriptures we are identifying here. Read them aloud out of your Bible. You might even highlight them for future reference. Okay, you are now actively seeking God. You are now ready to move on to step three.
